2024 Orca Recovery Day Stewardship Activity

Details

What: Volunteer Opportunity! Volunteers are invited to be a part of the solution for our endangered Southern Resident orca whales. Being a part of Orca Recovery Day is an opportunity for you to make a difference for our endangered Southern Resident orca whales.

Stewardship work parties connect people and conserve land. Stewardship means responding to the needs of the land and leaving it better than we found it. We care for the land to make sure ecosystems we rely on are rich with native plants and clean water.

When: Saturday, October 19th REGISTER HERE!

Where: We will join the Thurston Conservation District and City of Olympia at Squaxin Park (Formerly Priest Point Park) for our annual Orca Recovery Day!

Time: 10am to 2pm. I’ve volunteered every year since it’s inception, come for as long as you can, you will be glad you did!

What to Expect: During this restoration event, we will work together to restore forested habitats to their intended state by removing non-indigenous vegetation and planting Pacific Northwest trees and shrubs. The day will also include a guided shore walk, refreshments, and a chance to learn about other organizations helping to better our orcas!

BRING: Gloves, eye protection (glasses or sunglasses), wear sturdy boots, and dress for the weather: long pants/long sleeves, bring rain gear, hat, water/snacks/lunch, and a positive attitude. Be prepared to get dirty, have fun, share some laughs, meet new people! *Note: we will work rain or shine!

In Addition:
Bring #OrcaRecoveryDay to your home. You can be a part of the solution by joining countless others who are creating habits and taking steps to make a better, healthier environment than the one we have now. Actions You Can Take.

Thurston Conservation District Mission: Thurston Conservation District works with landowners to promote voluntary stewardship of natural resources in Thurston County. Volunteers are invited to be a part of the solution for our endangered Southern Resident orca whales. During this restoration event, we will work together to restore forested habitats to their intended state by planting Pacific Northwest trees and shrubs. Better Ground Mission: Better Ground is a collective movement across Puget Sound by twelve western Washington conservation districts, also known as the “Puget Sound Conservation Districts” (PSCD).

These twelve districts play a critical role in addressing natural resource needs with a coordinated approach that stretches from watershed planning to implementing green infrastructure across the broad mosaic of private lands. This collaboration on private property complements, augments, and protects the critical progress made on public lands.

These districts want to ensure that what makes this place special, remains special. Together, we can make this community an even better place to call home. Each year, PSCDs help landowners implement over 1,400 water quality protection and fish and wildlife habitat enhancement practices.
